What Is Photobiomodulation? Light as Nourishment

Photobiomodulation (pronounced foe-toe-bye-oh-mod-you-LAY-shun) sounds complicated, but the idea is simple. "Photo" means light. "Bio" means life. "Modulation" means gentle change. Put together, it means using light to interact with living cells.

What kind of light?

Photobiomodulation usually refers to red light and near-infrared light. Red light is visible, with a warm glow. Near-infrared light sits just beyond what our eyes can see, and it can travel a bit deeper beneath the skin.

This isn't the same as ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or a tanning bed. It doesn't tan or burn the skin.

How does it work?

Inside nearly every cell are tiny structures called mitochondria, often described as the cell's power plants. They turn the food you eat and the oxygen you breathe into energy your cells can use.

Researchers believe certain wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are absorbed by a part of the mitochondria involved in making energy. The idea being studied is that this light may help cells go about their natural work of producing energy.

What is research exploring?

Photobiomodulation has been studied for decades, with research looking at areas like skin appearance, muscle recovery after exercise, and comfort. Results vary based on the type of light, the strength, and how long it's used, and scientists are still learning a great deal. We think it's an exciting area, and we believe in being honest about what's known and what's still being explored.
